Bound Closed Seam

Used in unlined garments as an alternative to overlocking, a contrast colour or striped binding can create a feature of the seams inside a garment. This is often see in outer wear garments made with heavier weight fabrics & half lined tailored garments.

Bias binding must be used as this will curve and mould to the seam & avoid creating a ‘roping’ effect. Bias binding can be bought in various widths or you can make your own cutting the required width of strip on the bias grain of your fabric.

For this sample I have made the binding from self cut 3.5cm strips & bound a 1.5cm open seam.

1.5cm seam allowance with bound edge press both seam allowances to one side. Following the pressed line on the binding, at 5mm stitch onto the wrong side first, then flip over, fold the binding over and edgestitch in place.
