Channel Zip – method 2

Placement for a zip on a garment needs to be considered when designing, this will be marked on the pattern with a notch on the seam allowance. There should be a minimum 1.5cm seam allowance for any seam with a zip fastening, fabrics that fray easily require a 2cm allowance.

Mark opening for zip, the top stop just above zip teeth is placed just below the seam allowance & the seam starts just below the bottom stop where teeth end. Sew seam & press open.
Press under the seam allowance & pin or tack closed zip in place, the pressed edges should meet at the center line of the zip teeth .
Using a zipper foot stitch zip parallel to the center line, the pins or tacking stitches will act as guide. At the bottom corner keeping the needle lowered in the fabric pivot the garment 90 degrees & sew across the bottom of the zip tape, pivot at the next corner & sew up the other side.
As you sew near the zip puller you can pull it out of the way, make sure the needle is kept lowered to keep your line of stitching straight.
