Fly Front Trouser Zip

(with grown on zip extension)

This draft is for women’s trousers, the zip extension sits right over left as worn. For men’s trousers it is the opposite way round.

Press fly guard in half, sew bottom edge curve, turn & press & overlock long raw edges together, sew trouser fronts together up to the zip notch.

Press the zip extension under & 0.5 of the seam allowance on the other side as pictured.

Lining the bottom zip stop up with zip notch pin the zip in position so that the tape is sandwiched between the trouser front and zip fly.

Using zipper foot sew in place, stop stitching level with the zip notch.

Pin & sew the zip tape onto the zip extension, it is worth flipping it over to the right side to check the zip is concealed before starting to sew.

Topstitch the zip extension in place, it is worth chalking or tacking the line first for accuracy. Keep the fly out of the way so it doesn’t get caught in the topstitching!

Inside, catch the fly corner onto the zip extension to keep it in place.
